Brendan Rodgers among Top 5 candidates to replace Jose Mourinho

Who could replace Mourinho at Chelsea?
Chelsea’s miserable start to the season has been one of the major headlines during the first couple of months of the new season. On Saturday they surrendered a one-goal lead at home to Liverpool, crashing to a 3-1 defeat, and they have now taken only 11 points from their opening 11 games of the season.

In the wake of that defeat some bookmakers suspended betting on the Next Premier League Manager To Go market, but one market that remains open is the one regarding Mourinho’s successor. But who will be the man to replace the Portuguese if he leaves Stamford Bridge for the second time? Here are the leading contenders…

There is a new name in the race to replace Jose Mourinho - former England manager Fabio Capello! The Italian was sacked from his position as manager of the Russia national team earlier this year, following an underwhelming start to Euro 2016 qualifying, but a return to management with Chelsea may not be out of the question. Capello's Next Chelsea Manager odds have been slashed since he told Gazzetta dello Sport that he would welcome an approach from the Blues - but was Roman Abramovich listening?

Chelsea brought back Jose Mourinho for a second stint as manager – could they do the same with Carlo Ancelotti? The Italian manager, who left Real Madrid in the summer, is ready to make his return to football management and he has spoken publicly about his desire to have a second shot at the Premier League. Could Chelsea provide him with that opportunity?

Pep Guardiola – 8/1 Paddy Power

Current Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has long been linked with a move to Chelsea, and earlier this month the ex-Barcelona boss reportedly told friends he wants to manage in the English Premier League – but only if he can join a London club. Chelsea certainly fit the bill, but they may be forced to wait for their man because Guardiola has insisted in the past that he will see out his contract with the German champions, which ends next summer.

Diego Simeone – 10/1 Ladbrokes

Chelsea have raided Atletico Madrid for players in recent years, and reports in recent weeks have suggested they could swoop for more Atletico stars AND manager Diego Simeone. The Uruguayan has emerged as one of the best managers in Europe, leading Atletico to La Liga glory and a Champions League final appearance in 2013/14, and he did pen a five-year contract extension earlier this year. However, several newspapers have claimed Chelsea could test the Spanish club’s resolve.

Brendan Rodgers – 10/1 William Hill

Brendan Rodgers led Liverpool to a second-placed finish a couple of seasons ago, but the Northern Irishman paid the price for a disappointing 2014/15 season and a poor start to the 2015/16 campaign as he was given his marching orders. Could he make a shock return at Stamford Bridge? Rodgers’ stock is high following his spells as youth team and reserve team manager at Chelsea, and he has now been linked with the ‘big’ job.
