Court remands dismissed policewoman over theft of N4.5m

A 35-year-old dismissed policewoman, Mrs. Iyabo Ojulari-Abideen, arrested for allegedly stealing a car valued at N4.5 million, has been remanded by a Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Abeokuta, on Wednesday.

The suspect, sometime last year, approached a car dealer, Gbemisola Saburi, under the pretence that she was a policewoman, who wanted to buy Honda Accord Crosstour 2011, at OPIC roundabout,Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Eigbejiale told the court that the accused committed the offence which contravened Sections 516, 383 (2) (a), 390 (9) and 109 (a) (b) of the Criminal Laws of Ogun, 2006.
Eigbejiale said that Ojulari-Abideen approached Saburi a car dealer at Oke-ile, dressed in police uniform of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and introduced herself as a policewoman with an intent to purchase a car.
“ The accused told the dealer that she was sent by the commissioner of police and that the cheque will be forwarded to the dealer.
“ Ojulari-Abideen absconded with the car to Ibadan and then later to Port-Harcourt, where she was arrested by the Police,” he said.
The prosecutor told the court that in the course of investigation, the police gathered that the accused had been convicted twice on the same charge in Kaduna and Oshogbo, respectively.
The accused of no fixed address and occupation, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and impersonation, even as her plea was not taken by the court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Anthony Araba ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, adding that the accused be allowed access to medical facilities because of her condition.
Magistrate Araba thereafter adjourned the case to March 31 for consideration of bail.
