Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, as warned the FG against cutting the salary of civil servants as part of its moves to reduce the cost of governance.
The warning was made yesterday in a statement issued by its National President and Secretary-General, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama and Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal respectively, the ASCSN threatened that the action if taken would amount to an invitation for war.
Any attempt by the new government to reduce the salaries of workers will be viewed as an invitation for war by the labour movement. As we speak, many states owed civil servants bulk of monthly salaries and other rightful entitlements, yet these workers are expected to come to work by magic, feed their families, stay healthy, pay children school fees and rent,”the statement noted. In its determination to scale down the cost of governance owing to a drop in government revenue, the federal government is believed to be contemplating merging some ministries and government agencies and also seeking to cut workers’ salary. Some public officers have already claimed to have slashed their salaries by 50 percent.
