HBO is being slammed for a rape scene in the latest episode on HBO's 'Game of Thrones'.
The scene featured newly married characters Sansa, played by Sophie Turner, and Ramsay, portrayed by Iwan Rheon.
Ramsay's rape of Sansa was off-camera but it was implied in her cries and the distressed reaction on a bystander's face.
It was not in George RR Martin's novel, which is the basis for the show. In the book, a different character marries Ramsay and is sexually assaulted by another man at Ramsay's direction.
Senator Claire McCaskill described the sexual assault as "gratuitous" and "disgusting" on Twitter.
"Ok, I'm done Game of Thrones. Water Garden, stupid. Gratuitous rape scene disgusting and unacceptable," she wrote. "It was a rocky ride that just ended."
This isn't the first time the fantasy drama has been criticized over such a scene. Last season, it featured a similar scene involving incestuous lovers.
The latest episode even prompted one reporter at Britain's Independent to write: "In Game of Thrones women are raped so often it's almost routine, and the assaults are used as a lazy signal that the Seven Kingdoms are pretty messed up."
"When the rest of the show is so compelling, it's frustrating that this is element is so mishandled. We get it, being a woman in Westeros sucks. Now, can we get back to those dragons?"
