Signing Yaya Toure would be a "dream" for Inter Milan but Manchester City's asking price could prevent a transfer, according to the club's general director Marco Fassone.
Toure, 31, has been linked with a summer move away from City, with Inter, where former City boss Roberto Mancini is now in charge, mooted as potential suitors.
Mancini has regularly talked up a move for the midfielder, whom he worked with at City between 2010 and 2013.
The Ivory Coast international still has two years remaining on his current contract at the Etihad, and Inter have indicated they are not optimistic of securing his services.
Fassone told Tuttosport: "Who doesn't dream of having a player like him? Toure would give our midfield line something that we are lacking.
"But his wages and City's asking price might be a big obstacle."
Toure has made 22 Premier League appearances for City, who are second in the table, this season, scoring seven goals.
Fassone also discussed the futures of striker Mauro Icardi, midfielder Mateo Kovacic and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
"We are almost there with respect to Icardi's contract extension," he said. "We want to keep him just as we want to keep Kovacic. We will evaluate with great care [their] eventual offers.
"It's clear that if we want to sign three players [this summer] we will need to evaluate those that will depart.
"Handanovic's renewal is an issue that we must resolve at once. We need to understand what he wants. We cannot go into next season knowing that our goalkeeper's contract expires."
