It was full of optimism that Nadal came into the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, on the back of what he declared to be his best week of the season at the
Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, where he felt he was finally back close to his best in a semi-final showing.
But after a shock third-round exit against Fabio Fognini on Thursday, the eight-time Barcelona champion was left pondering his lack of consistency and a lacklustre forehand.
"Today is a bad day,” said Nadal. “But my challenge is to get back to my best level again and I will work until that happens. I have the conviction that it will happen.
"It was a disaster today. Fabio played better than me and he deserved to win. I didn't deserve to win. Until I sort out the ups and downs I'm suffering from this season, I will continue to be vulnerable,” added Nadal, who was also beaten by Fognini on clay in the Rio semi-finals in February.
"I spent last week in Monte-Carlo full of good moments. It was the best week of the year. But this one has been the opposite. It's been a very negative week. I thought I would be able to find consistency, but it hasn't happened.
“I can only say goodbye to the tournament, one of the best ATP World Tour 500s in the world, and to the club, without doubt one of the best in the world, and that I will keep working hard to find my best tennis."
After twice squandering a break advantage against Fognini in the second set, Nadal looked to have righted the ship as he served to level the match at 5-4. But he was broken to 15 as Fognini went on to force a tie-break. Nadal saved three match points down 3-6, but it was a case of too little too late for the left-hander as Fognini converted his fourth match point.
"When you're playing with really small margins, you can lose,” said Nadal. “That's what happened. A few balls decided the match. I needed to make a difference earlier, not waiting till the end of the match to hit my forehand.
“I didn't have enough power or speed on my forehand. I didn't have control of the points with my forehand. When I was in good positions, I couldn't push Fognini back. When that happens, my game can't hurt my opponent. That was the case today.”
