Former Chelsea player and legend Gianfanco Zola has been sacked by the Seri A club Cagliari. Ironically, Cagliari was Zola’s last professional club of his playing career.
Zola moved in management with West Ham in the Premier League and then moved on to coaching in Serie A. Zola took over as the Cagliari boss on the Christmas Eve but was in charge for only 3 months. Cagliari are currently 18th in the league, just 4 points from safety with 12 games left to play.
Zola was given only 10 games to prove his worth as the manager and he came up short in doing that. This was Zola’s third termination as the manager of a football team following his exits at West Ham (2011) and Watford (2012).
The Italian club issued a statement to announce the decision. Cagliari’s statement read:
“Cagliari Calcio announce that we has dismissed Gianfranco Zola and his staff from the technical guidance of the first team.
“This decision was made reluctantly, in respect of a great man who wrote unforgettable pages in the history of Cagliari, bringing lustre and prestige to Sardinia.”
“He and his staff depart with thanks for the work done in recent months, carried out with dedication, professionalism and passion.
“We wish him heartfelt good luck for the rest of his career.”
Zdenek Zeman, who made way for Zola is the likely candidate to become the short term manager for the club while the likes of Claudio Ranieri, Walter Zenga and Delio Rossi are being considered for the permanent position for next season.
For Zola, there are rumours that he could be in line for the manager’s position at QPR should the club survive relegation this season.
